Trip Planner: Europe / Greece / South Aegean / Cyclades / Santorini / Akrotiri / Akrotiri LightHouse
One of the oldest lighthouses in Greece, Akrotiri LightHouse still stands as a sentinel on Santorini. A French trading company built the square structure in 1892 and operated it with oil, but the beacon switched to electricity in 1988. Wear closed-toed shoes to safely climb the rocky hill, and when you're finished, consider a meal at one of the surrounding fish taverns. Bring your camera to take advantage of the many photo ops here, which are especially gorgeous at sunset. Akrotiri LightHouse Reviews
The lighthouse was pretty, but really, it's all about the view. I was glad to have a guide with us telling us about the caldera and explaining what we were seeing. I don't know if you can go into... more »
We truly loved driving down the coast and seeing the lighthouse at the end. It is a quick and simple trip, but offers stunning views. It was very hot in June, so go early if you can. Hike out and... more »
Worth checking out. Fun to hike around the hills, be sure to have good shoes as it is rocky. The lighthouse itself is fenced off but the views are wonderful. Parking is the only downside, the road right at the end of the road does have a small turn around area, but can get quite packed with cars and quads.
On a clear dark night we had the most amazing view. Cruise ships, lit up like Christmas trees, sailing by as the Ray's of the lighthouse pointed out the presence of the nearby cliffs. While simultaneously the stars sparkled in the vast black abyss that we know as our Galaxy. Definitely worth a visit during the day and even more so at night on a clear day.
