A place of myth, mystery, and horror, Parco dei Mostri was designed not to please, but to astonish. The park’s name stems from its many larger-than-life sculptures, which appear to be have been randomly strewn about the area. The symbolism of these Mannerist works of art is obscure, with figures of a turtle with a winged woman on its back, a huge elephant trampling a Roman legionary, and a dragon attacked by lions, to name just a few of the oddest examples. The layout of the lush garden, created in the 16th century, is attributed to architect Pirro Ligorio, and the sculptures to artist Simone Moschino. The garden, still a private property, has been a major tourist attraction since the 1970s. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance. Parco dei Mostri reviews
The Parc Dei Mostri, or Park of Monsters, is the main attraction of the mountainside town of Bomarzo’s Sacro Bosco park. It’s somewhere I’d intended to visit on trips to Rome several times but never..... more »
The park is rather small, pathway created due to covid is rather short and takes more or less half an hour. The price for each person is 11 EUR. Sculptures are interesting and whole park is... more »
What a fantastic park! I’d highly suggest reading the pamphlet about the park that you get when purchasing your ticket— it’ll help you understand the park a bit more. The park is laid out in a way that you can follow a path and see everything in the park, however I opted to just wander around, and get a feel for the place on my own. The park is in a nice wooded area, which provides plenty of shade while exploring. I’d suggest hitting the restrooms before heading out, because it can be easy to spend a few hours in the park, which could be a ways from the bathroom depending on where you are. Great place for families, couples, and single people! I’ll be back again.
Very cool experience. I love that they gave us a map and interpretation of each historical statue written in english. If you are looking for a place to visit that is sort of "off the beaten path" and not swarming with tourists and perhaps a different kind of experience, then this is it.
