Explore a French colonial-era structure turned into a national museum at Royal Palace Museum. Built in 1904 for King Sisavang Vong, the palace served as a residence for the royal family until the overthrow of monarchy by communists. The structure contains a mix of traditional Lao motifs and the French Beaux Arts architectural elements. As you pass the entrance made of Italian marble, notice the variety of religious objects, paintings, and other diplomatic gifts decorating the palace's lavish halls. Besides the main building, you can also examine several buildings on the palace grounds, including the conference hall, kitchen, staff headquarters, and a lotus pond. • The palace/museum is small and limited on information. It's quite beautiful in places and has some interesting articles to look at but I was done in about 30 minutes. There are free lockers to leave bags and cameras in which you're not allowed to take into the palace itself. It felt secure. The grounds are nice but limited shade on hot days. 30,000 kip entry cost. Overall if you're nearby and have the time take a look but don't worry about missing it if you have a packed schedule.
  • Interesting place, modest palace by many comparisons, but though. Taking photos is not allowed, unclear why? There are also presented cars of the last king, cars are partly in need-for-restoration state, as are some buildings in the complex. Hope, those works will be taken in coming years.
