Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham, Luang Prabang

Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
At Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham, admire an ornately decorated early 19th-century temple, supposedly deemed too beautiful to destroy by the invading Chinese. The lavishly adorned structure is steeped in gold, with black pillars stenciled in an aureate pattern, and a large golden relief on the facade imparting the story of the Buddha's highest incarnation as Vessentar. Exploring the red ochre interior, you'll find an abundant collection of Buddha statues, including a large golden portrayal surrounded by many smaller versions. Bear in mind shoes must be removed while inside the temple, though photography is permitted, so don't be shy with your camera. Take the guesswork out of planning a Luang Prabang vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.

  • Good quality local food, better than the hotel I was at. The added bonus is that all profits go to the Thai family planning association, which operates the restaurant and the ethnic museum above. One incongruous thing though, considering who runs it, is the waitresses are all running around in very skimpy uniforms, which to me looks really retro. At night they have a keyboard player/singer (not too loud) who does a pretty good rendition of classic western pop songs.
  • It is a small temple. If you have time is worth it to visit all temples around the city. It will take you one morning
