An impressive but slender 45 m (148 ft) gilded structure surrounded by high walls, Great Sacred Stupa (Pha That Luang) imposes itself with its beauty as a symbol of Lao-style Buddhism. A national symbol, which made it on the country’s official seal, the complex is believed to enshrine a breast bone of Buddha brought by a Hindu missionary sent by King Ashoka as early as the third century CE. This most revered national monument features a huge statue of a gilt reclining Buddha, and a statue of King Setthathirath, the founder of the present-day stupa built in 1566, erected in front of the main entrance. The complex lies some 4 km (2.5 mi) north of Vientinane. By using our Vientiane trip planner, you can arrange your visit to Great Sacred Stupa (Pha That Luang) and other attractions in Vientiane.

  • As part of an 18 day Asian adventure to celebrate our 40th anniversary, my wife and I enjoyed a short 5 day Wendy Wu “Laos in Focus” private tour in January 2020, organised through Asia DMC Laos...  more »
  • An iconic site in Vientiane, thankfully it wasn't too busy during my visit so I was able to enjoy a unrushed walk within the inside perimeter. There are many other things to visit around this Stupa  more »
  • This is the main temple of Vientiane, and we can easily understand why it is so famous. The temple is wonderful, pretty well maintained. I don't know when was the last time they covered it with gold, but it's shining pretty hard with sun, it's amazing. If you come just after lunch time, you will be alone in there, without meeting all the tourists buses bringing so many people inside. Definitely worth the visit.
  • A Buddhist temple which is imposing by its size and architecture. Worth a visit of 2 hours if you are touring in Laos just other side of the border of Thailand. I imagine one of the biggest in Laos. Lao people are very nice and gentle and very helpful to explain the meanings of this temple and its beauties.
