Catherine Palace and Park, Pushkin

#1 of 2,126 in Parks in Russia
Located just a short drive southeast of St. Petersburg, opulent Catherine Palace and Park once served as the official summer residence of Russian royalty. Originally built on the orders of Empress Catherine I, the imposing palace underwent a massive reconstruction during the reign of her daughter Elizabeth, who spent exorbitant sums on grandiose Baroque projects. No expense spared, the building's facade and roof statues once contained over 100 kg (220 lbs) of gold. Now part of a World Heritage Site, the palace and its gardens represent the finest expression of Russian imperial architecture. The easiest way to explore this massive complex is with an audio guide, available at the on-site ticket office. Check online for opening hours and guided tour options. • I accidentally wore a light blue shirt and yellow skirt, I almost blended into the palace, whoops. There are two routes for going through the palace, I'm not sure which one we did, and its entirely...  more »
  • Another beautiful discovery in St Petersburg. Impressively refurbished with a wonderful story. The gardens are also worth a visit. You could spend between 4-5 hours exploring this magical landmark...  more »

  • Visited here in Winter - it was snowing and gloomy, and way too cold to walk around the park, unfortunately. Nonetheless, the palace was extremely grand and opulent, with extremely intricate detail in the architecture. It is quite a distance away from the city centre though - if you only have a couple of days, the Hermitage has a similarly grand and beautifully embellished architecture. Though perhaps in summer time it will be nice to walk around the entire park complex!
  • Mesmerizing, just jaw-dropping! The Amber Room is a must-see. It was pretty organised but busy because we were in a cruise group tour. We had enough time to enjoy the details of the interior decor, however, as expected, when you get to the popular rooms, it is too crowded. In most places you are allowed to take photos except the Amber Room. We were asked which is better ... Versailles in France or this. Each palace is unique, however, this wins for me.
