Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, St. Petersburg

#1 of 3,702 in Historic Sites in Russia
Easily recognized by its richly decorated facade and onion domes, Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood marks the spot of Emperor Alexander II's assassination. Designed in the traditional Russian style and completed in 1907, the elaborately decorated church famously contains over 7,500 sq m (80,800 sq ft) of mosaics, more than any other religious structure in the world. Intricately detailed mosaics completely cover the interior walls and ceilings, depicting various biblical scenes and figures. The church claims a prominent spot on a 5 km (3.1 mi) canal, cutting through this part of the city since the 1730s. To see the interior, remember that foreign visitors must pick up their tickets and photography permits at the administrative office just inside the church. • This is a stunning Church interior that is suggested by the even unique and colorful external quality of this worship space and place ! It essentially operates as a museum but I was glad to see so much reverence here! It is vividly painted and otherwise adorned with a moving array of Sacred imagery centered upon the life of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Imagine a stark, sparsely ornamented church and then in your mind think of what the 180 degree opposite of that would be. Savior on the Spilled Blood is wall to wall, and from ceiling above to floor below magnificent to behold. Check it out!
  • Beautiful inside and out. The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is built in a medieval Russian style that makes it stand out from many of the more modern-looking Baroque and Neoclassical buildings that make up St. Petersburg. The inside is covered with typical orthodox art in the from of mosaics. When I was there (July 2019), the top dome was being renovated under a scaffolding, unfortunate for picture taking but reassuring in its maintenance of the church to last for many more years. The church is directly adjacent to a canal, and in the summer at least, there are many vendors selling the same souvenirs over and over. It is definitely a very popular place for tourists inside and outside which makes it harder to photograph effectively.
