The riverside capital of Laos, Vientiane still has a relatively small urban area and a laid-back, relaxed feel to it.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Great Sacred Stupa (Pha That Luang) and Wat Si Muang. Get some historical perspective at Wat Si Saket and Ho Pra Keo. There's lots more to do: enjoy breathtaking views from Patuxai, stroll through Chao Anouvong Park, look for gifts at Saoban, and appreciate the history behind Buddha Park.

Near the borders of Thailand and Japan in southern Laos, the small town of Champasak is best known for its UNESCO-protected ruins.
Start off your visit on the 20th (Wed): look for gifts at Chez Maman, explore the ancient world of Wat Phu, then admire the landmark architecture of Wat Muang Kang Temple, and finally wander the streets of Si Phan Don.

Designated a World Heritage Site in 1995, Luang Prabang sits at the meeting point of two rivers and offers numerous opportunities for sailing, climbing, and exploring scenic caves and waterfalls.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Golden City Temple (Wat Xieng Thong) and Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham. You'll explore and learn at Royal Palace Museum and Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre. There's still lots to do: admire the sheer force of Nahm Dong Park, identify plant and animal life at Kuang Si Falls Butterfly Park, surround yourself with nature on a nature and wildlife tour, and hunt for treasures at Luang Prabang Night Market.
