Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Scrovegni Chapel and Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like San Giorgio Maggiore and Scala Contarini del Bovolo. Venture out of the city with trips to Padua (Orto Botanico di Padova & Basilica of St. Anthony). There's much more to do: wander the streets of Dorsoduro, pause for some serene contemplation at Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, take in panoramic vistas at Torre dell'Orologio, and snap pictures at Ponte dei Sospiri.
