Create an itinerary including Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple
Visit the vast complex of Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple, a marvel of South Indian architecture sprawled over 6 ha (15 ac). Dedicated to Meenakshi, an avatar of Parvati and a warrior goddess, the current 27-temple complex dates back to the 17th century. Approach the temple through the surrounding pedestrian-only streets, admire its towering pillars, and visit the sacred “golden lotus” pond. Although the main shrine is only open to Hindus, you can explore the rest of the temple premises. Remember to dress modestly as the staff enforce strict wardrobe rules. • I visited temple during evening. The approach to temple is through crowded street filled with vendors .. No safety issues as such.. There’s a ticket queue (₹100/ person) which can help to cut down...

  • Stunning place, definitely worthy your visit. Please expect crowds and long time standing in lines. You will need to wear long trousers, no shoes, and you can’t carry cameras and phones. There is no access between 13:00 and 16:00. You can gain entry through either of four towers. Architecture and sculptures are unique and unforgettable. Look also for secondary gates located outside of main towers, they are beautiful and very interesting in their own right. The temple complex looks breathtaking from afar too. Try to get to any of the hilltops in Madurai - views from there can amaze you!! Their are 4 entrances to the temple. The East one is the main entrance. The majestic gates are crafted with one of the finest architecture ever to be seen. Very astonishing view at sunset time. Eco friendly restrooms available. Baby feeding rooms separately available too. A very beautiful temple and very important in Hinduism
