Create an itinerary including Raya Gopura
Wander through the remains of Raya Gopura, an ancient , unfinished temple entrance, and admire its intricate carvings and sculptures that survived the test of time. Largely overlooked by tourists, the hilltop location serves as a good vantage point offering uninterrupted views of the coastline and the nearby lighthouse. The monument was erected by the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana in the 12th century, but suffered a Muslim invasion in the 14th century and has been laying in ruins ever since. Look for the statue of Lord Narasimha--part lion and part man avatar of Vishnu--on one of the granite pillars. With our international travel planner, Mahabalipuram attractions like Raya Gopura can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • This is part of the complex that houses Krishna’s butter ball but one needs to go towards the top to reach here. The structure depicts all forms of Lord Vishnu and one can also see the lighthouse...

  • Incomplete but nice location. You have to climb uphill. Would have been biggest amongst all the monuments if competed that time.

  • A beautiful place to see the real marvel of rock carvings. Raya Gopuram is a monument in the line of monuments at Mahabalipuram dates to the later Vijayanagara Kingdom. What seems to be an entrance(Adisthana) to a temple, is an unfinished structure, which has the foundations of a Gopuram. How ever the Vimana or the temple was never completed. Currently a beautifully carved entrance structure lies in the site, with Beauty carvings of designed pillars, base with Door structure, animal motifs. Yali or dragon motif with Apsaras adorn the base of the four door stones. Images of Narasimha & Lakshmi on one pillar along with other images. One pillar has the images of Dasha Avatar of lord Vishnu.
  • Good to seethe Rayar Gopuram and it’s art. Faced to the sea side looks beautiful.
