Within 25 km (15.5 mi) of both Singapore and Malaysia, several cultures meet on the highly developed industrial island of Batam. Small but densely populated, the island of more than one million people became part of a special economic zone in 2006, allowing Batam to trade with Singapore without tariffs and further increasing the island's growth and industrialization.
