Create an itinerary including Sumiyoshi Shrine
Traverse the iconic and supposedly spiritually cleansing bridge at Sumiyoshi Shrine, the city's iconic shrine. One of the oldest in the country, it probably dates back to 211 CE, a flagship of a network of some 2,000 Sumiyoshi shrines nationwide. The main shrine represents the oldest example of Sumiyoshi-zukuri architecture, characterized by a straight, uncomplicated roof, gabled entrance, and simple vermillion-and-white interior. Head to the intricately rendered gardens for a peaceful spot to relax and reflect, watching the koi and terrapins in the pond. • Within walking distance from Hakata Sta. We found this shrine very peaceful and unusual in that it is an older shrine honoring the God of Sumo. We were lucky enough to see junior Sumo wrestlers...

  • It is a historical shrine that can be reached on foot from Hakata Station. There was a sumo ring there, and the cherry blossoms were in full bloom near it. March 27, 2022
  • Went on a weekday around lunch time. The place was not crowded and was very quiet and serene, peaceful and a great escape from the hustle of daily life! The area has many trees including fruit-bearing ones that attract birds
