Explore one of Japan's largest Chinese quarters at Shinchi Chinatown, teeming with restaurants, confectioneries, and shops selling traditionally made souvenirs. During the Edo Period (1603-1867), when the entire nation was isolated from the rest of the world, Nagasaki was the only city allowed to openly trade with China. Through the ages, the neighborhood has developed into a sightseeing hub, marked off by traditional red-colored gates on all four sides. Depending on the side of your approach, you will be welcomed by one of four deity sculptures guarding the entry: Azure Dragon at the east, White Tiger at the west, Black Tortoise at the north, and Vermilion Bird at the south. The area hosts many festivities, most notably Chinese New Year, when colorful lanterns decorate the streets and fireworks light the sky. A step into the rich Chinese heritage of Nagasaki. Some good food, lots to see. Was there for the Latren Festival (a must if here during Chinese New Years)
