At Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham, admire an ornately decorated early 19th-century temple, supposedly deemed too beautiful to destroy by the invading Chinese. The lavishly adorned structure is steeped in gold, with black pillars stenciled in an aureate pattern, and a large golden relief on the facade imparting the story of the Buddha's highest incarnation as Vessentar. Exploring the red ochre interior, you'll find an abundant collection of Buddha statues, including a large golden portrayal surrounded by many smaller versions. Bear in mind shoes must be removed while inside the temple, though photography is permitted, so don't be shy with your camera. A gorgeous temple worth seeing and a true testament to the Laotian architecture. The walls are covered in gold and Buddha images are abundant. Definitely worth seeing while in Luang Prabang.
