The Caribbean island of Montserrat can divide its history into two main parts: before 18th July 1995, and after. On that date, the previously dormant Soufriere Hills volcano became active, destroying the capital, Plymouth, and surrounding settlements. Residents were evacuated to the north of the island, or emigrated to the UK. Most guests visit the volcano and inspect the damage it caused during their trip to Montserrat, although access to certain areas in the volcano's immediate vicinity is carefully managed, or entirely banned.
