Castle of Good Hope
Listed as a provincial heritage site, Castle of Good Hope represents a well-preserved 17th-century star fort initially used by the Dutch East India Company. Built between 1666 and 1679, the timber and clay pentagonal castle remains South Africa's oldest existing colonial structure. Once you reach the compound, which now houses the capital's mechanized infantry unit, you can explore the military museum and other ceremonial and exhibit facilities. You can also stop by one of two restaurants inside the castle to eat and relax. The site offers limited access for the elderly and disabled, but an electronic tour allows guests to visit certain points of interest without the use of stairs. Using our world travel planner, Cape Town attractions like Castle of Good Hope can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

We spent a couple of hours here. There's a good amount to see, read and learn. The military part is particularly interesting. Make sure you go upstairs onto the roof area, it's not well signposted...

The Castle of Good Hope has a lot of history embedded in it. It shows and tells a great tale. I am happy that they are trying to keep the castle in good condition and opening new exhibitions to keep visitors excited and engaged. I would recommend it if you are in Cape Town.

Good hope. Still considered to be one of the best preserved examples of a VOC fort which stands strong to this day. The castle features small museums, gift shops, tours and much more. It is a very fascinating place to visit when on vacation in the Western Cape. It is one of the many reminders of the great achievements made by the European inhabitants of Southern Africa.
