Admire the artful curation of traditional Thai design at Jim Thompson House, a complex of buildings collected from across the country in the 1950s and 60s. The brainchild of American businessman Jim Thompson, this estate brings together classic architectural examples in one place and today offers an interesting introduction into traditional Thai arts and crafts, such as silk spinning. Relax under the verandas of the cool, rust-colored buildings, and admire the work of local craftspeople before enjoying a meal at the onsite restaurant. • The tour is overpriced for bangkok, nothing more than a 30min advertising-talk about the former businessman and his way of life - use your time in Bangkok better than I did with this tour

  • I don’t know why this is so highly rated. It’s a house of some missing silk merchant. Is there mystery surrounding how he disappeared? Yes. Does it warrant a giant tour with a gift shop at the end.....  more

  • I adore the house, garden and various artworks around the museum. The guide tour itself feels clearly geared towards the white tourists. I guess it’s a general feel-good story about a Caucasian business man went to Asian, got fascinated by the culture, loved by the natives, and most of all, saw a great business opportunity. The tour did show how Jim and his partners embraced Thai traditions and how he was undeniably a crucial factor in the flourish of the nation’s silk industry, but the narration feels a bit monotone as it doesn’t take the Thai people into the picture and more about how tasteful Jim is. Besides, in each room there are screens that show art performance of another contemporary artist, which I feel kinda out of nowhere and don’t really fit the atmosphere.
  • Lovely oasis of peace and quiet in chaotic Bangkok! The guides are very knowledgeable and friendly. I heard that the visit can be done in multiple languages, I saw a French-speaking and an English-speaking guide, with very good command of the languages. You cannot visit it by yourself, first you need to take the tour, then you're welcome to stay in the compound for as long as you wish. The main house can be visited only with the guide. Tip: the canal behind the house has a local market and a bridge with authentic views of the city.
